the summer before senior year
the summer before senior year A few days ago, Spotify generated a playlist for me that included a song from Bowling for Soup. This, of course, made me think lmao, remember Bowling for Soup? This, of course of course, made me get sad about growing up, so I amplified the sadness by listening to more Bowling for Soup songs. I learned 3 things. The Girl described in Girl All the Bad Guys Want could not possibly be any real person who has ever existed. That song is wild. High school never ends. I cannot tell the difference between good and bad music. In keeping with the theme of nostalgia and high school and growing up, I thought I should write a bit about how different things are now. A lot of people reading the admissions blogs are rising seniors in high school. I am now a rising senior in college. Its crazy how much can change in that four-year gap. The summer before my senior year of high school I had no idea what I was doing. I didnt know if I wanted to be a scientist01 At this point, I was pretty sure I was going to go to school for chemical engineering, since I was ~good at chemistry in high school.~ I was young and naive and blissfully ignorant of 5.12. for the rest of my life. I didnt know which schools to apply to in the fall, mostly because I had no frame of reference for which schools were out of my league.02 I didnt do sports, I didnt have a lot of leadership experience on my resume, and I didnt want to go anywhere north of Birminghams latitude because I hated the cold. I was in lab from 9 to 503 a completely unexpected series of events led to me, a high-schooler, getting the opportunity to work in a real chemistry lab for the summer during the week, working on a project that wasnt entirely mine.04 this was a relief to me; I am very grateful to have leeched off of one of the very sweet grad students projects I was anxious because I had to prepare a poster for the poster session at the end of the summer, but I didnt think I had enough data05 the premise of my project was essentially Is This A Good Way To Purify Large Amounts Of Protein? and the results were essentially No to make a poster. My mentor gave me papers to read, but it felt like they were in another language.06 which added to doubts I already had about me being cut out to be a scientist I felt ashamed every time I didnt know something obvious or made careless mistakes in lab, because I was supposed to be the smart kid from the smart school. At lunch time, I would eat a cold sandwich that was somehow always just a little bit wet.07 I like a cold, dry, plain sandwich. The ones from that summer were mostly smoked turkey and cheddar on a very large piece of Publix Cuban bread, and the moisture was coming from either the processed lunch meat or condensation from humid air+refrigerator. Everyone else in the lab was an adult with a life outside the lab,08 the grad student I worked with was married! but I had no idea where they found the time for that. Locate and Identify Black Locust in North America
Robinia pseudoacacia, commonly known as the black locust, is a prickly tree within the subfamily Faboideae of the pea family calledà Fabaceae and is considered to be a legume with flattened pea pods several inches long. Black locust is native to the southeastern United States, but has been widely planted and naturalized elsewhere in temperate North America, Europe and Asia. The original range of the locust is in the Appalachian, Ozark and Ouachita rangeà located in the middle mountains of Eastern North America.à They are now considered an invasive species in some areas even within the natural range. Black locust was introduced into Britain in 1636 where it has slowly garnered a universal appeal to tree lovers. Black Locust Identification One major identifier is the long compound leaves with up to 19 leaflets which presentà the typical and unique locust leaf profile (not to be confused with the twice compound leaves of honey locust). The other ID marker is a small stout briar spineà on branches, often curved and in pairs at each leaf node. Late spring to early summer flowers can be showy, white and droopingà with 5-inch flower clusters. These flowers are fragrant with a vanilla and honey scent. The leguminous fruit developing from the flower has 4-inch papery thin pods with small, dark-brown, kidney-shaped seeds. These autumn seeds will persist until the next spring. You will find this tree primarilyà in areas where it colonizes open fields and roadsides. Its ability to grow in poor soils, fast growth, ornamental foliage and fragrant flowers make for a favorite tree to plant. More on Black Locust Black locust is sometimes called yellow locust and grows naturally on a wide range of sites but does best on rich moist limestone soils.à Black locust is not a commercial timber species but is useful for many other purposes. Because it is a nitrogen fixer and has rapid juvenile growth, it is widely planted as an ornamental, for shelterbelts, and for land reclamation. It is suitable for fuelwood and pulp and provides cover for wildlife, browse for deer, and cavities for birds. We must recognize that black locust is not an important tree for logging purposes as there is very little timber value and it has little lumber or paper pulp potential. We still need to remember that the tree has and is usedà in the United States to be manufactured into a wide variety of products. Robinia pseudoacacia is planted for many specialized purposes. Black locust is used for fence posts, mine timbers, poles, railroad ties, insulator pins, ship timber, tree nails for wooden ship construction, boxes, crates, pegs, stakes, and novelties. Pulp with satisfactory mechanical properties can be made from the tree, particularly by the sulfate process but commercial value awaitsà further investigation.

Wealth By Andrew Carnegie And The Communist Manifesto By...
There are different opinions towards inequality, some people are accepting of it while others dislike the whole idea of inequality. Is it okay to let the wealthy have more control than the poor? Should their ideas matter more than the non-wealthy? And most importantly should the poor be okay with this, if not what must they do? In ââ¬Å"Gospel of Wealthâ⬠by Andrew Carnegie and ââ¬Å"The Communist Manifestoâ⬠by Karl Marx, both Carnegie and Marx expose their thoughts behind inequality and its traits. In his opinion progress required the processes of competition. Making capitalism an engine of progress. Carnegie believed that there is good to inequality while Marx begs to differ. Marx had his own view on capitalism, he believed that it would eventually result disastrous. 5 foreign languages that look great on your CV
Modern foreign languages (MFL) are still taught in schools, but they are no longer part of the compulsory GCSEs that students must take, which means that from the age of 14 many children stop learning languages. We recently published a post which looks at the benefits of learning a second language, and one of the key benefits was the edge that it gives you in gaining employment. In today's global market, more and more companies are seeking to deal with clients and businesses overseas, but a lack of multilingual employees holds them back. If you speak a second language you are likely to be very desirable to an employer. If you're considering learning a second language, here are five that are widely spoken, fairly easy to learn, and will likely open up a variety of job options for you... PORTUGUESE One of the romance languages, Portuguese is the seventh most spoken language in the world. It is spoken in, in descending order of native speakers, Brazil, Mozambique, Angola, Portugal (obviously!), Guinea-Bissau, East Timor, Macau, Cape Verde, Sà £o Tomà © and Principe by over 262 million people. Brazil is now the world's sixth largest economy, ahead of the UK, and with the 2016 Olympics taking place in Rio de Janeiro this summer, all eyes are on Brazil. Many native Brazilians speak English poorly or not at all, so the ability to speak Portuguese will make you desirable to any employer who is looking to tap into this growing economic market. The language is closely related to Spanish, and has similarities with French and Italian which are also romantic languages, so it is fairly easy to learn. Around 600 hours (less than 6 months) of classroom time should lead to a decent level of proficiency.SPANISH With 406 million native speakers worldwide, Spanish is the key to communicating effectively with Spain (of course) as well as most of the Latin American countries and even the USA, where it is the second most spoken language after English. According to a survey carried out by the British Council, more than a third of UK businesses said that Spanish-speaking employees were useful to their organisation. Spanish is one of the romance languages and is fairly easy to learn; in fact, when you start to learn it you'll probably realise that you already know more than you thought thanks to its wide use in the media. Similar to Portuguese, you should expect to be proficient in Spanish after around 600 classroom hours. GERMAN Germany is Europe's largest economy, and continues to defy the general downturn of the eurozone with a GDP of more than â⠬2.4 trillion. The language may only have 110 million native speakers, but for UK businesses it's a very valuable language to be able to communicate in. In fact, almost half of all UK companies surveyed by the British Council felt that German was useful to their business operations. German is fairly easy to learn as many of the verbs and adjectives are pretty self-explanatory, but the grammar can be a bit tricky. Many people find that they achieve a decent level of proficiency after 900 classroom hours, or just over six months. The time investment is worth it though as the ability to confidently communicate in German will make you stand out from other candidates.FRENCH French is one of the most popular modern languages taught in schools, but since the compulsory GCSE in MFL was made optional fewer people have been carrying it through to their adult lives. However, French remains one of the most sought-after languages by employers, with almost half of all UK companies who were surveyed citing it as a useful skill for their organisations. There are around 74 million native speakers of French worldwide, and it is the official language of France (not surprisingly), Belgium, Canada, Luxembourg, Madagascar, and various African countries. Whilst it may not be as globally prevalent as languages like Spanish and Portuguese, the fact remains that France is still one of the UK's most important trade partners so it is definitely worth taking the time to learn it or brush up on your old skills. RUSSIAN There are 155 native speakers of Russian throughout the world, making it the eighth most commonly spoken language. Although there are some parts of Russia experiencing poverty, there are also many areas full of wealthy people who are on the lookout for new business and investment opportunities. If you speak Russian you can be a valuable asset to a company who are looking to expand. The UK's relations with Russia haven't exactly been great since the end of the Cold War, but according to the Government's Trade and Investment website it is now the fastest-growing export market. If more English people can learn to speak Russian it will surely pave the way for much smoother relations between our two countries in the future. Having a different alphabet system makes Russian rather hard to learn, and you should expect to put in around 1100 classroom hours, or around 44 weeks before you reach a decent level of proficiency. However, it's definitely worth the challenge as it will make you super-desirable to employers!

Racism and Injustice Essay
Racism and Injustice Essay Free Online Research Papers Racism and injustice have affected people in America for many years. Why is the color of a persons skin such a big factor in the way people feel about each other? There are many reasons why racism is just a fundamentally bad idea. Why should we as a nation keep the disease of racism alive? Parents are still raising their children to hate people of a different color. Why conjure up prejudice fro, the past and being it to the future? Racism is based on ignorance. Why should the present generation have to apologize for what their ancestors did in the past? The 2 stories that we read described and educate us of the injustices rendered on these 2 men. We are now aware how racism can affect people. Steven Harmon a 16 year old boy who is on trial for murder, while on trial he is staying in prison. Steve is a straight- A student who causes no trouble at all. He was at the drugstore before the murder which made him a suspect. Monster, is a book about racism and injustice and how it affected Steven Harmon. Rubin carter a professional heavy weight champion was charged for murder of a white cop. He had nothing to do with it he was totally innocent , they just blamed the black man. He spent 2 decades of his life behind bars for something he didnââ¬â¢t commit. Steve and Rubin are both young black males that have something in common. They had a great life before they are being suspects are charged with murder and being thrown in jail. They had 1 piece of evidence for both men. One of the suspects in monster said that he was not really an accomplice, he just pretended to be. They found Rubinââ¬â¢s shoe print near the crime scene, which means nothing. They saw Steve at the drug store 5 minutes before the robbery, while buying some candy. Everybody at the jury is usually white. Both of these stories complies with alleged acts of racism and profiling between both Steve and Rubin. Which I believe was leading to a false trials and convictions. However, the criminal justice wrongfully imprisoned 2 innocent men, 1 for 20 and another for about 2 years because of racism. Movies and songs were made to acknowledge Rubin carterââ¬â¢s innocence. Translating culture - Essay Example Globalization is an overwhelming global trend drawing both positive and negative influences. One of the significant impacts of globalization on cultural identity lies in the spread of multinational corporations. This has been a significant driver of consumer culture and standardization of products and values.2 Globalization has been significant in propagating economic opportunity, elevating human rights, and enhancing access to information, technology, and goods and services to the people. Globalization has had a remarkable influence on the viability of locally made products and the people who take part in producing them.3 Local culture can be analyzed in terms of three dimensions. The first dimension relates to human relationship to nature and to life while the second dimension relates to symbols and rituals that aid people in structuring social relationships and building communities. Lastly, culture infers quest for ultimate meaning that avails goals and motivations. People make cu lture, and culture, in turn, makes people. Cultures keep on changing, and evolving, and the elements within any cultural identity reflect consumer choices. Nevertheless, globalization may accelerate cultural change and lead to a quick dilution of local cultural identity.4 From a socio-cultural perspective, globalization has a permeating effect on building of relationships between and among people.5 Prior to the emergence of globalization, most cultures were local, autonomous, distinct, and well-defined. The previous robust and culturally sustaining experiences, connections and reinforced local cultural identity have been destabilized. In this case, identity can be perceived in terms of gender, sexuality, religion, ethnicity, and nationality. In the contemporary world, peopleââ¬â¢s lives are perpetually being modified by contradictory trends of globalization and identity. Cultural identity and globalization are correlated and interconnected phenomena. Globalization is a critical s ource of transformation of new and modern ideas, development of human capital and information. Globalization has enhanced contacts between people with their values, ideas, and ways of life. Globalization diffuses cultural traits from one society to another. Culture is altered by other cultures that it comes into contact with through diffusion, commercial or political relations. Globalization has been associated with free flow of information, rapid advancement in technology and communication. Similarly, there has been phenomenal growth in the transportation sector, leading to the world becoming a ââ¬Å"global village.â⬠The new global culture signifies a ââ¬Å"deterritorializingâ⬠character of globalization and eventual emergence of a borderless world. This aspect is blamed for diminishing the consequence of locality in cultural experience.6 Globalization has eased the way in which people can take part or integrate into another countryââ¬â¢s cultural, economic, and pol itical life. The dominance of capitalism geared towards selling as much as possible to maximize profit has contributed significantly to the weakening of local cultures. The hyper commoditization stems from massive advertisement campaigns carried out to disseminate information concerning the products. Consumer

The contemporary economic systems is classify into 4 type including capitalism economy, socialism economy, mixed economy and Islamic economic. In capital economic system, all main economic decision is determined by private owners in capital market with minimal government interference also know as free market economy or laissez faire. Transaction on the prices of goods and services are determined in a free price system by the buyer and suppliers in open markets. The socialism economy is an economic system in which the central government controls most of property resource and major economic decisions regarding the production and distribution of goods and services through a central planning boards. One of the causes of market failure is the existence of monopoly of power by certain party such as the price of resources is higher than marginal costs can lead to allocation of inefficiency and pareto sub-optimal equilibrium in the market. Inequality may also cause market failure through the economy, as the income of different group of individual lead to wide gaps of living standard. Market failure can be corrected through government action or decision to reduce inequality by changes in tax and benefit system such as national minimum wage. Civic Virtue: The Right Thing for Our Society Essay -- society
Introduction Perhaps, the American society is the most divergent, the most accommodating and the most culturally diverse among all societies across the globe. Interestingly, most Americans reflect similar elements of behavior in many respects which are distinct to our American society. There are a number conscious and unconscious core values which are expected to guide every American character. Most of the American culture has to some extent embedded western civilization: A civilization that accommodates different cultures, merges multiple ideas, and values the freedom of choice. Still, a number of challenges in the direction of promoting our general wellbeing have been arising; thus, leading to questions on the direction that our society should direct for our common wellbeing. Here, I will be discussing approaches that can be designed in addressing the issues of wealth distribution, and the relationship between politics and community beliefs so as to have an even happier society. Inequality, Cohesiveness and Civic Virtue One among the challenges that face our society today is the widening rift between the rich and the poor. Although our politics has evaded the reality of a widening society, several philosophers have given their opinions on the challenge of wealth distribution. Our politics has become so distant from the challenge of widening social gaps that president Obamaââ¬â¢s proposal to review tax laws in the direction of burdening the wealthy with more taxes has received heavy criticism from the republican political quarter. Apart from philosophical ideologies on the topic of wealth distribution, there is a more important challenge which requires the attention of our political leaders: Civic Virtue. Getting a picture of ... ...place in our schools and other institutions. Instead of focusing on the teaching of various religious and moral beliefs, students should be allowed to openly present their opinions on various religious matters. Such a direction must be done under an environment that respects the right of people to choose various religious and moral beliefs which are available in our society. Conclusion As I have discussed, I agree with Sandelââ¬â¢s opinions on the two issues (the distribution of wealth, and an open engagement between religion and politics) that I have discussed above. Wealth distribution is especially useful in guarding our democracy, promoting, cohesiveness, and improving the welfare of the poor. On the other hand, an engagement between politics and religion will be useful in promoting unity, tolerance and knowledge within our society.

DFAââ¬â¢s investment portfolio Essay
Identify the sources of value DFA is providing its investors DFA creates different value to its customers. For Registered Investment Advisor, the value was the educative access to top researchers who were developing innovative theories and empirical analyses. For high-net-worth individuals, it is low management fee as the services are provided through RIA. For other investors, the value is high performance of portfolio it manages. The sources of values DFA managed to create come from: ââ¬â Close relationship with prominent academics, who also have stake in DFA. The academic research has played crucial role in the performance of DFAââ¬â¢s investment portfolio and brought substantial return to its customers over a long period of time. ââ¬â Reputation of the DFA in small cap market help the firm reduce transaction cost, pick and choose the right stock to invest, contributing to positive return for its customers. 8. What are some of the trading costs associated with small, value stocks? How does DFA manage these potential trading frictions? Given the fact that small and value stocks have lower liquidity compared to large and growth stock, transaction of small and value stock is more difficult. There are some trading costs associated with them: ââ¬â When investment fund wants to buy small and value stocks in open market, their price will go up very quickly. This increase in price will negatively affect the next purchase of the same stock of the investment fund. DFA instead of going to the market and bid for stock, it absorbs the selling demand from the others. By taking a large part of stock, it can even obtain a discount on the stock purchase. ââ¬â Once the investment fund owns an amount of a certain stock, the future sales of stock to the market may pose some pressure on the price of stock. DFA when buying stock from seller would try to make sure that it take the whole position of th e seller so that it avoids the scenario when the seller sells the other part to the market and the price of stock goes down immediately after DFA buys it. ââ¬â Same applied when the fund tries to sell its stock. If investment fund sells a large block of stock, the price of stock will be pushed down. To avoid this transaction cost DFA normally offers small amounts of stock to the market each day. It takes more time to sell out but the price of stock will be maintained. 12. Likewise, throughout the 1990s, growth stocks outperformed value stocks. Hence, should DFA reconsider its current strategy? What if growth continues to outperform value over the next five years. Would your answer change?à Again, how would you explain the poor performance of the fund to your clients? Although the growth stock outperformed value stocks in 1990s thanks to the high-tech boom, DFA should not reconsider its current strategy because of the following reasons: -Looking at a long period of time (from 1926 to 2004), despite some up and down, value stock still outperform growth stock (Timââ¬â¢s calculation) -DFAââ¬â¢s philosophy of investment has been based upon market efficient. And according to market efficient theories, the higher return of growth stock given the lower level of risk compared to value stock will go away as people start to chase growth stock. Switching to growth stock will not help DFA to make sustainable return. Even though the growth stock continues to outperform for the next five years, our answer would not change. The growth stock cannot outperform the value stock for too long because it has lower level of risk. Value stock will soon bounce back in terms of return soon. 14. What future strategies would you recommend DFA pursue? Make a specific recommendation, and justify it. Should they abandon/modify/maintain their current size and value strategies? Should they explore other interesting anomalies and adopt similar strategies?
