Discussion of social inequality has been present in sociological works dating back as far as early 18th century in the works of Karl Marx and Emile Durkheim. Centuries later, theoretical foundations of both Marx and Durkheim can be readily applied to social inequality in the context of present day Canada. Durkheim’s theory is founded in analyzing how societies function by focusing on the ideas of the division of labour, merit and functionalism. Marx on the other hand, views society as divided into social classes of bourgeoisie and proletariats, while stressing the importance the role of capital plays in society in relation to inequality. Both Marx and Durkheim’s theories of modern society can be used to critically discuss social inequality in Canada. However, this paper will demonstrate the strength of Marx’s theory when compared to that of Durkheim in terms of their applications to Canadian social inequality. There are countless living beings and countless levels of rebirth from those in the hells to plants, animals, humans, and gods. Circumstances of rebirth are not seen as rewards or punishments from a controlling God but are the natural results of various good deeds and misdeeds. The cycle of rebirths involves suffering and continues until all cravings are lost and nirvana is achieved. The basic difference between Hinduism and Buddhism is this. Hindus believe in an external existence of self which can eventually merge into a greater self, and Buddhists believe that the self is ultimately transitory, and its elimination is freedom from material existence which is suffering. They are quite different approaches, yet the practices, such as meditation, chanting, and self-discipline, and effects, such as happiness and serenity, are very similar. Both realize that life seen through the bodily senses is not the ultimate reality which is transcendent to the material world. Both also have a belief in karma. Being a Christian, the idea of reincarnation is pretty foreign and a little frightening. I have gotten so used to the idea of having one life that I cannot imagine what it is like to know you are going to be reborn, and possibly as an animal. In a way, I feel like Hindus and Buddhists take their religion more seriously since there main goal is to achieve moksha/nirvana, and to do so they have to live several undesirable lives. I am sure I would be on my best behavior too if I knew I could be reborn as something awful. It seems like they worship a lot more often and suffer until the end of their rebirths, where as Christians usually just worship once a week and seem to enjoy life more; they do no focus on suffering as much as they know they only have one life. I respect the idea and both religions, but I just have a hard time grasping the concept. In Christianity, reincarnation is typically rejected and there is only one life. Based on Jesus’s teachings, Christians believe that God created human beings to live eternally in fellowship with him. The future includes the resurrection of all people, a judgment, and eternal life in either heaven or hell. Christians believe there will be a judgment where everyone’s life will be evaluated. Those who depend on Christ for salvation can be assured that they will pass this judgment. The Bible states that there are two different outcomes for eternal life: heaven and hell. They are described using terms that seem metaphorical: a city built of gold in heaven, a lake of fire for hell. While Hindus and Buddhists believe in reincarnation, karma, and liberation, Christian’s believe in death, resurrection, and judgment. Man only has one earthly life and death, and when he dies his spirit will be reunited with his body. Men often do not receive fair or just rewards for their lives. Instead, when Jesus returns, He will judge all men and declare our eternal rewards on the basis of our lives, good or bad. The concept of reincarnation seems to offer one of the most attractive explanations of humanity’s origin and destiny. The idea of many deaths and rebirths is an interesting one, but a very strong belief in many religions such as Hinduism and Buddhism.

Hundreds of thousands of people came to see the Generalissimo in the mausoleum. In 1961, just eight years later, the Soviet government ordered Stalins remains removed from the tomb. Why did the Soviet government change their mind? What happened to Stalins body after it was removed from Lenins tomb? Stalin's Death Joseph Stalin had been the despotic dictator of the Soviet Union for nearly 30 years. Though he is now considered responsible for the deaths of millions of his own people through famine and purges, when his death was announced to the people of the Soviet Union on March 6, 1953, many wept. Stalin had led them to victory in World War II. He had been their leader, the Father of the Peoples, the Supreme Commander, the Generalissimo. And now he was dead. Through a succession of bulletins, the Soviet people had been made aware that Stalin was gravely ill. At four in the morning of March 6, 1953, it was announced: [T]he heart of the comrade-in-arms and continuer of genius of Lenins cause, of the wise leader and teacher of the Communist Party and the Soviet Union, has ceased to beat.1 Joseph Stalin, 73 years of age, had suffered a cerebral hemorrhage and died at 9:50 p.m. on March 5, 1953. Temporary Display Stalins body was washed by a nurse and then carried via a white car to the Kremlin mortuary. There, an autopsy was performed. After the autopsy was completed, Stalins body was given to the embalmers to prepare it for the three days it would lay-in-state. Stalins body was placed on temporary display in the Hall of Columns. Thousands of people lined up in the snow to see it. The crowds were so dense and chaotic outside that some people were trampled underfoot, others rammed against traffic lights, and some others choked to death. It is estimated that 500 people lost their lives while trying to get a glimpse of Stalins corpse. On March 9, nine pallbearers carried the coffin from the Hall of Columns onto a gun carriage. The body was then ceremoniously taken to Lenins tomb on the Red Square in Moscow. Only three speeches were made - one by Georgy Malenkov, another by Lavrenty Beria, and the third by Vyacheslav Molotov. Then, covered in black and red silk, Stalins coffin was carried into the tomb. At noon, throughout the Soviet Union, came a loud roar - whistles, bells, guns, and sirens were blown in honor of Stalin. Preparation for Eternity Though Stalins body had been embalmed, it was only prepared for the three-day lying-in-state. It was going to take much more preparation to make the body seem unchanged for generations. When Lenin died in 1924, Professor Vorobyev had done the embalming. It was a complicated process that resulted in an electric pump being installed inside Lenins body to maintain a constant humidity.2 When Stalin died in 1953, Professor Vorobyev had already passed away. Thus, the job of embalming Stalin went to Professor Vorobyevs assistant, Professor Zharsky. The embalming process took several months. In November 1953, seven months after Stalins death, Lenins  tomb was reopened. Stalin was placed inside the tomb, in an open coffin, under glass, near the body of Lenin.   Secretly Removing Stalin's Body Stalin had been a dictator and a tyrant. Yet he presented himself as the Father of Peoples, a wise leader, and the continuer of Lenins cause. After his death, people began to acknowledge that he was responsible for the deaths of millions of their own countrymen. Nikita Khrushchev, first secretary of the Communist Party (1953-1964) and premier of the Soviet Union (1958-1964), spearheaded this movement against the false memory of Stalin. Khrushchevs policies became known as de-Stalinization. On February 24-25, 1956, three years after Stalins death, Khrushchev gave a speech at the Twentieth Party Congress that crushed the aura of greatness that had surrounded Stalin. In this Secret Speech, Khrushchev revealed many of the horrible atrocities committed by Stalin. Five years later, it was time to physically remove Stalin from a place of honor. At the Twenty-second Party Congress in October 1961, an old, devoted Bolshevik woman, Dora Abramovna Lazurkina stood up and said: My heart is always full of Lenin. Some families experience it for a brief period however a portion experience chronic poverty throughout their lifetime. In many cases the greatest challenge is the lack of financial resources, but whatever the case may be the stakes get higher when it come to the effects on children. How does poverty and poor healthcare affect children mentally, emotionally, and physically Poverty can be defined in various ways. Primarily poverty is broken down into four categories: Absolute and relative poverty, and, generational and situational poverty (NPC). The number of people living below a certain income level unable to afford basic goods and services are defined as absolute poverty while, relative poverty are people placed in poverty because they do not meet the standards. These people have the necessities of living a healthy lifestyle; however, they still nonetheless classified as living in poverty because they live below the federal poverty level. On the other hand, poverty can be generational or situational. Generational poverty is defined as being in poverty for two or more generations. Situational poverty is due to different circumstances such as death in family, loss of job and is usually for a shorter period. So what does it mean to experience poverty? According to the national center for children in poverty, 37 million children are living in poverty in the United States. So ultimately when a death in the family occurs, the expenses along with the instant change in income makes a household fall apart; following the depression and lack of will power, many are in a fog on how to recover and rise there families to the standards they were accustom to. Families dealing with poverty worry about so many things, they try to continue to pay all there bills on time, stretch their money tying to camouflage the issue so their children will not know how bad it is (Meltzer). Nevertheless, poverty brought on by d eath changes everything, situations that are already hard to deal with when you combine that with being put on a fast track to poverty makes things more unbearable. The government programs such as food stamps, free or reduced lunch, medicad, government checks are the safety net for children living in poverty. These programs help children cope with the changes by giving them a way where they can still maintain some normal see to their lives. School breakfasts and lunches are the only meals some children get and over a million children according to Joan Flores do not receive the adequate breakfast needed because the school does not offer the program (children advocate). In certain counties or certain states, if you are homeless or cannot provide an address you are automatically be denied for government assistance; not to mention if the government finds out you are homeless your children you are running a risk of them taking your children. In addition, some families that are receiving these benefits should not, where as some families cheat the system taking viable resources that could be life or death for a child in need. Even though these programs are intended to help these ch ildren and families at need, tying to obtain this help is not only stressful for the family but also the child or children involved (Burnett, Personal Interview). Children in poverty are affected mentally, emotionally, and physically not to mention these children are prone to a shorter life span. Poverty affects children before they are even born, parents already in poverty do not receive the adequate prenatal care need for the child to develop properly. The stressful situations these children encounter on a daily bases can led the child to have low self-esteem and difficulties forming relationships with other even before they enter school. Not only are the children education impacted by poverty their choice of schooling is also impacted. Many underprivileged children are forced to attend under funded schools; statistics show that these children will ultimately drop out of high school and give birth during the teenage years. These children will often fall behind when entering school. A child who attends a under funded school or fall behind could be the start of the child not learning to read and write proficiently, they are also likely to continue to struggle as a high school student. Having poor grades in high school, his/her future for attending college is seriously limited. Since most careers are often tied to higher education. The lack of a high school or even a college degree sets the poor child up for a lifetime of struggle never making it out of the struggle they already know (Payne). Many of the mayors such as Edward J. Kelly, Martin H. Kennelly, and Richard J. Daley won over the blacks and got their votes for them to become mayor. The black population grew by 77 percent by the 1940. The white population dropped from 102,048 to 10,792 during the years of 1940 to 1960. With all of these peopl e moving into Chicago there had to be more housing. There were many houses built to accommodate all the people. Martin H. Kennelly at one time wanted to tear down slums and have public housing built in the black ghetto. Many of the blacks wanted to escape these ghettos so some of them; if they could they would try to move to the white communities. When the blacks would try to move into the white communities they were met with mobs. There were many hurdles that blacks had to overcome not only in Chicago but all over America. The blacks of Chicago had to fight for a place to live and to find a mayor that would help them for who they are, not their color. Throughout Chicago there were many fights that blacks had to fight. William Golding believes that human nature is lead towards evil and destruction. The boys in The Lord of the Flies acted on the first one to make a decision, in which this case was Jack. Golding’s fundamental belief about human nature is strongly lead towards evil actions. This reminds me of the Vancouver fans article that occurred about 3 months ago. There are many reasons to why Golding’s belief is what it is now. Many examples can be seen in Brian Hutchinson’s Vancouver article. Golding uses strong examples of his belief in Lord of the Flies including when people started seeing Jack act savage, they began to think it could be okay to act savagery also. As in the Vancouver article, as soon as a few people started rioting, destroying property, and going wild, everyone else realized that they should begin to do the same because it looked okay from their perspective. Golding’s belief can clearly be seen as human nature is evil in all cases. One important reason that Golding makes about human nature in the Lord of the Flies is that there was a lack of law enforcement which forced the boys to lose mortality and act on instinct. In the beginning, the boys made rules and followed them, but eventually, one person spoke out against the rules. I’ve got to get a barb on this spear! We wounded a pig and the spear fell out. If we could only make barbs—† Jack’s interest of getting saved is no longer in his mind. He has now focused on hunting with his crew. The Vancouver article was no different. Obviously the people of Vancouver didn’t kill one another but, they did terribly hurt one another. When Vancouver had lost, people began to riot, and once one person does something different, everyone else begins to wonder that maybe it’s okay to act as they are. The people of Vancouver did not realize what they were doing until it was too late. A lack of law enforcement was beginning to be seen at the streets of Vancouver. People began to realize that they could get away with looting, robbery, and destruction of their own city! The police of Vancouver did not  realize how bad the rioting was about to come. They thought that people would slowly start to stop, but the exact opposite occurred. More and more people began to destroy police vehicles, rob stores, and break windows of buildings. There was no sense of civilization in Vancouver, people acted on instinct, in which this case was turned towards evil. Civilization did not only fade away because of the lack of law enforcement. It also began to fade away because of a desire for power and control. In the beginning, the boys voted for a leader, and they voted for Ralph because he knew how to make decisions and what things needed to be done first. Jack did not like the idea of having Ralph as leader, he felt he should’ve been leader, but he went along with it until he had the opportunity to take it. Jack knew that Ralph couldn’t survive without him because Ralph relied on Jack for food. Once everyone had gone to Jack’s group, Jack took the chance and gained control of everything eventually. He wanted what was rightfully his, being the leader. Jack had this obsession with being in control that he went to the extreme of killing his own friends. There is no excuse for murder. Once Jack had control, he felt powerful. He only went on with hunting, but took everything from Ralph until he had nothing. He did this because Ralph was the only thing stopping him of being evil. So without noticing, Jack took everything away from Ralph until it was just him, and when that occurred, he tried to kill him. Jack wanted power, so Jack did whatever he had to do to become leader. The people of Vancouver acted similarly to the boys. The Canucks fans wanted the power to do whatever they wanted. They did whatever was necessary to have that feeling of control over the city. They went as far as destroying their own city, burning vehicles, and even killing one another! Law enforcement needs to be much better when in a situation like this, but there also needs to be a certain degree of control in the city. The most important reason to why Golding’s belief is evil for human nature is because of the hunger for freedom from the constraints of civilization. The boys had been living there lives following rules by their elders. They felt it was time for change. Ralph was appointed leader but the boys felt that they’d had enough of rules and orders. The boys were completely by themselves. They were getting their own food, they were making shelters, and they appointed roles for everyone to keep up with. Jack was tired of following rules, and he especially didn’t want to follow rules from someone younger than him. Jack stepped up and made his group of hunters. Slowly, more people began to see Jack as the better leader, but Ralph had been appointed leader, so there was no change to that. They were all alone on an island; there hunger for freedom had grown the longer they stayed on the island. Jack felt that on the island, there were no rules to abide by. There needed to be freedom from laws. Jack showed them that it’s better to act wild than to act civilized, which is morally wrong but was a lot more fun. In Vancouver, the citizens felt that the riot was an excuse to act differently, to act wild. People were lighting cars on fire, destroying stores, and vandalizing not anymore because Vancouver lost, but now because it was the excuse to break rules. The people of Vancouver were following rules their entire lives. This was simply an excuse to break the constraints of society and feel freedom. In conclusion, law enforcement was needed to be done in order to keep the people from becoming worse, power and control was wanted from everyone in the city because of rules set to stop everyone from wreaking havoc. â€Å"Human nature refers to the distinguishing characteristics, including ways of thinking, feeling and acting, that humans tend to have naturally.† Vancouver used to be seen as one of the safest cities in the world. This goes to show that even the worst of places can become the worst of places.
